What is demoscene ?

Demoscene is an IT-related sub-culture that focuses and aims at artistical creation in the form of programs, this creation being based on 3 domains such as computer assisted music, infographics and programming. The basis pre-requisite is to achieve technological/artistical performance whilst deploying programming tips or real programming performances. The programs herewith are called demos; while competences needed to produce demos are embedded in the so called demomaking (see demo creation)

While watching a demo, the computer calculates the displaying of a synthesis video sequence, sounds and other multimedia themes realtime. A demo is an executable binary file to be clearly differenciated from a video file (avi, mpg..) or a music file (mp3, ogg...).
Some websites however offer the ability to watch demos in a given video format (e.g. www.demoscene.tv). This video format usually generates losses in the video quality and does not show the realtime performance- as one does not know the technical specifications of the computer having operated the video capture.
However, video formats allow to watch demos in avoiding to have a computer tuned with the adequate operating system or the material configuration required for a recommended quality display.

A member of the demsocene is called a demoscener, or a scener.
The sceners are usually organized in group. The best groups meet in competitions during demoparties.
